ASTM Approves Updated Heating Oil Specification Allowing Biodiesel Blends Up To B50

ESEA

ASTM has approved an update to its heating oil specification (ASTM D396) to include biodiesel blends of up to B50, reflecting ongoing research and real-world experience with higher blends.

This update is significant because ASTM standards provide the foundation for fuel quality, safety, and consistency. Establishing a recognized specification offers guidance for those exploring renewable fuel options and helps ensure reliability where these blends are used.

For our members, this development represents an additional tool—not a requirement—as we navigate evolving policy discussions and market demands. As New York continues to pursue climate goals, having established standards in place helps ensure that, if higher blends are considered, they can be implemented in a way that prioritizes reliability, customer confidence, and operational practicality.
