Spillage of petroleum that reaches navigable waters* or adjoining shoreline must be immediately reported to the following two agencies:

National Response Center (NRC)
Coast Guard Headquarters
Washington, D.C. - (800) 424.8802
N.Y.S. Oil Spill Hotline - (518) 457.7362

You should be prepared to provide the following information to Federal and State Officials at the time of these calls:
  1. Company name and location
  2. Name of the person reporting
  3. Location of the spill
  4. Material spilled
  5. Estimated quantity
  6. Action taken for containment and cleanup
  7. Water bodies or steams involved
*Note: Navigable waters include virtually every body of water or continuous stream.
The definition includes:
  1. Waters which are navigable, in fact;
  2. Waters declared navigable by a federal Court or agency
  3. Tributaries of navigable waters
  4. Interstate waters; and
Interstate lakes, rivers and streams (a) from which fish or shell fish are taken and sold in interstate commerce; (b) or which are utilized by interstate travelers for recreational or other purposes.
